LA-based artist Mike Stilkey creates whimsical painted sculptures out of stacked books. Mike has always been attracted to painting and drawing not only on vintage paper, record covers and book pages, but on the books themselves. Using a mix of ink, colored pencil, paint and lacquer, Stilkey depicts a melancholic and at times a whimsical cast of characters inhabiting ambiguous spaces and narratives of fantasy and fairy tales. A lingering sense of loss and longing hints at emotional depth and draws the viewer into their introspective thrall with a mixture of capricious poetry, wit, and mystery.

His work is reminiscent of Weimar-era German expressionism and his style has been described by some as capturing features of artists ranging from Edward Gorey to Egon Schiele. Mike’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States as well as internationally, at galleries and museums such as the Bristol City Museum in the UK, LeBasse Projects in Culver City, CA, Kinsey/DesForges Gallery in Culver City, CA, David B. Smith Gallery in Denver, CO, Gilman Contemporary Gallery, Ketchum, ID, and Rice University Gallery, Houston, TX.

Nicole Martinez is an art director and designer from Boston Massachusetts. “Nerdy Dirty” is a series of illustrations about love, crafted by illustrator Nicole Martinez. These technically clever prints are dedicated to the inner geek in all of us.

“My boyfriend and I came up with the phrase ‘nerdy dirty’ a while ago because we would say such nerdy things when we were trying to be romantic.” shares Nicole. “So when I got the urge to design something sweet I could only think of things like ‘Arota tell you how much I love you’. Hence, Nerdy Dirty posters were born.”

Estudio Minga is a creative studio based in Argentina. They started a project called WTF and with gaining popularity they had to come up with WTF2 as well. What makes this achievement even better, is that it was started just for fun. These posters are very minimal, and yet cleverly executed with funny imaginations. You can also buy these posters from their online shop for $19 each.

WTF is an expression that somehow manages to be one of the most trending topic on Twitter and in our lives as well. Most people use a question mark afterwards to get the point through. Rather than using the same term for the other ‘w’s, who, when, where, and why, it makes more sense to actually state the word and follow it with ‘tf.’ We hope you will enjoy the following illustrations and spread the word!

The internet’s affections for the undead and Disney Princesses are perhaps only matched by its predilection for seeing familiar characters in semi-unfamiliar situations. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, these portraits of zombie cartoon royalty by Thai illustrator Witit Karpkraikaew are so extraordinarily creepy I can only look at them in my peripheral vision.

Seriously, that Snow White is making me seriously reconsider a late breakfast. You can find more of Karpkraikaew’s artwork at his Deviant Art page — his penchant for bold colors and over-the-top gore brings to mind some of the zanier Thai horror movie posters of the 1980s.

Artist Erin Hanson, the blogger behind Recovering Lazyholic, took an introspective look into her own life and created a series of illustrations showing the contrast between what she wants and what she needs. As humans we often tend to lust/envy for materialistic objects. Sometimes it’s personal and other time it relates to social pressure. The bottom line is you only need enough to survive.
